Opposite Sides of the Fence
Posted under My Observations by MikeI was floating around the blogsphere yesterday minding my own business. Lurking, commenting, checking out boobies here and basically avoiding work as much as possible.
Yeah, business is slow right now…
It was during this surfing I stumbled on a post that made me sit up and go, “Huh.”
I found the Blog Antagonist from “Blogs are Stupid” through my friend KT at “When Did I Become a Grownup”.
As I read her post “I F****ing Hate Politics” I found myself agreeing with her. She talked how we need to find tolerance for individuals. Avoid shouting matches just to get your points across. This isn’t about chest thumping and who can market themselves best. This is about working together and to find common ground.
I really have to tell you I enjoyed her rant. She wrote what I’ve been thinking and saying to people concerning this election. Best line in the post was “People who don’t agree with you are not stupid or immoral. They just believe differently.” Good stuff.
The irony of all this is that I didn’t look at her site very closely until after I had read her post and commented. The Blog Antagonist has Pet Issues and Causes displayed prominently on her site. Most of them I would not support myself.
But I will gladly fight for her right to support them. And her right to speak her mind.
Opposites can agree. Take that Washington…

I love her blog. I don’t always agree with her, but she is very eloquent when she states her opinions, they are obviously well thought out, and her posts are generally very thought provoking. I recommend you go back for more.

But still, some people really are just stupid, right??
Although I do agree with that and I find as I get older I do tend to open myself up more to others’ points of view. Doesn’t mean I like them or have to agree with them, but I’m not as close-minded and thinking I’m so right all the time as I used to be.
But I am still right a lot of the time. At least this is what I tell my husband.

I have a lot of respect for people who can not only state their opinions, but can also respect my (and others) opinions as well.

I guess this is where I can chalk myself up as being naive. I don’t understand complete and utter hatred and fear for the opposition. You don’t like their position, their views, whatever. But why spew hatred? What does it gain you? Nothing.
I know that you have different political views than I have but does that make you scary or bad? Does it make me scary or bad? No. Just different. And I think that discussing those views only helps things.
I think if you believe what you believe and can back that up with reason, then it’s all good. Have a reason for your beliefs, don’t just spew what you heard on Rush Limbaugh or Keith Olbermann that night.

I find it way easier to respect other people’s POV’s when I don’t hear them.
I don’t discuss my views with anyone, and I don’t discuss anyone else’s views with them either.
