Look on the Bright Side…

Posted under How I See It by Mike

cup

The last few weeks have not been my best.  I’m seeing the beginning of the end to my job.  I’ve survived the last couple of weeks with both my daughters going through finals in high school.  I’ve spent the last month taking care of my wife whose foot is just now near healing.  My ex threw me a curve (see last post) that I didn’t see coming.

I know in the grand scheme of things these are not devastating.

But lately this has becomes a time for reflection.  A realization that those friends you’re looking for on Facebook don’t exist.  They’ve died.  I’m coming close to a half century of life, learning and “wisdom.”  At least that’s what I try to explain to my daughter’s when they roll their eyes at my explanations.

On the weekend mornings I walk to the local grocery store.  It’s a time for the dog and I to bond.  Inside the store there is a coffee shop.  The guy managing the coffee stand recognizes me as a “regular.”  “Large coffee and hey, what’s new” is usually how I begin our morning conversation.

This coffee guy is about my age and so I feel that he and I have a kind of kinship.  A mutual understanding of what we’ve done to make this far in life.

Without a hesitation, his answers are always, “What a great day it is today.” It could be storming outside and he’d comment on how it’s great that we’re getting all of this rain.

He has such sincerity.  He really does believe in the positive.

Our weekend morning talks are brief, and yet I walk away with his infectious attitude.  Something I wish I could bottle for the rest of the week.

In a few months I will no longer have the obligation to get up in the morning and head to work.  I won’t have one to go to.  However…

I will get up, grab the leash, call the dog, walk on over to the grocery store and order up a large cup of “optimism.”

Good for you Mike! You take what is good and let it be the theme for the day. I have my own batches of hell. The simple hello’s or the “being known” are a niceity (SP) I’m 52. Life gets better when you expect less.

Life is Good – everything eventuallly works out.

I am a firm believer in the maxim “Everything happens for a reason” and if we’re lucky enough and can keep a positive outlook, we are lucky enough to see the reason for it all.

I’m keeping you in my thoughts Mike, good on you for trying to keep positive.

  10. Bad Momma Said,

The bright side is that you can still afford to buy that “Cup of Optimism” and soon you will have more time to walk the dog! My hubby went through that three years ago & is enjoying a (hopefully temporary) mid-life retirement. We were lucky to have 5 years foresight to prepare.

Please do not tell me at almost “half a century of life” all your Facebook friends are gone. ( I will hit that milestone in a few months) Time to make younger friends!

Hang in there and have another cup of optimism with me!

What’s that dude putting in your coffee, Mike?
Oh, I’m just kidding. I’m reading “The Last Lecture” right now and it too is humbling. We live good lives, we just don’t know it.
