Coffee, Tea or…

Posted under Work by Mike

coffee I’m going to preface this post by saying; yeah I’ve been a bit spoiled.  But, there is nothing worse than having something vital to your work life yanked away.

For those of us who work (or have worked) in an office environment, coffee is a staple.  A much needed beverage first thing in the morning.  This is the brew from which clear thoughts and happy attitudes originate.

Most of the companies I’ve worked for have always provided coffee to its employees.  Sometimes we were given some “generic brand” that the office assistant picked up at the grocery store.  Other times we would be fortunate enough to get the holy of all Columbian coffee, Starbucks.

Coffee is not a luxury but a necessity.  An office without caffeine is not a happy office.  Grumpy people are not productive people.  They work with bad attitudes and sloppy enunciations.  Have you ever had a conversation with someone B.C. “Before Coffee” ?  Slurred speech, shirts untucked, red eyes, if they can walk they’re dragging their feet.  It’s just not a pretty sight

So this morning as I dragged my caffeine deprived body into the office and grab my mug to head to the break room I noticed it.  A sign taped to the wall above the coffee maker in red lettering.

“Coffee makers will be returned to leasing company on February 20th.”

According to their last memo our “new employer” doesn’t provide coffee to its valuable employees.  It’s an expense that they can’t, or won’t make.  A multi-billion dollar bank that’s livelihood is based on making its employees happy.

But get this, according to that same memo, we do provide coffee to our banking customers.

Great…

  1. Jen Said,

Oh man, that’s the pits! My (ex) work didn’t provide coffee either, we had to buy it out of a vending machine. I love that though- when the (very small) perks get taken away. Since I’m sure the VPs are giving up their bonuses and all.

That’s because I (as the customer) am vital. Remember that post from the other week…
I’m so sorry for you guys – I’ve never heard of such a thing.

Go to Wal Mart and get yourself a $20 deal and then take it with you in June. You will be the most missed employee ever!

Whoa. It seems like the whole idea of morale has disappeared. Of course I work for myself, so I have to bring my coffee in a thermos if I want any! I usually just drink it at home first.

  6. Bad Momma Said,

Why that’s downright Un-American! Didn’t they get the memo that Caffeinated Workers Are More Productive?????

Sounds to me like you are working in a Hostile Work Environment.

Perhaps you could set up a coffee maker in your office and sell coffee to your office-mates. Could be a good side-venture……

  7. Lanny Said,

    Ouch! Sorry.
Why take something that improves the productivity of employees away? Clearly they want you to not work as hard as you have been.

    Jen – Yeah, that’s a laugh, VP’s not getting their bonuses…

clickmom – True, what are they going to do, fire me? I’m out of a job by June…

Cocotte – You’d get what they “call” coffee. Brown water is more like it…

Anne – I’m thinking of starting a coffee cart for the office. Make an extra buck or two…

citizen – Morale is slowing disappearing from this office…

Bad Momma – Yep, I’m thinking of just do that soon…

Lanny – Their wish may come true…

Russ – Yeah probably brown water is what gets served…

terri – Going on strike when I’m out of here in June probably won’t do much good…

    Weaselmomma – I like your idea a lot…

    daysgoby – Another great idea…

Wife – Yeah, but you get the really good stuff at home, honey…

Matt – I wish I could. Still it probably won’t be good coffee…

Debbie – I feel you. I am useless without my caffine fix…

Heather – Have one on me…

Worried – And he was a very wise man who lived a very long time…

Start a coffee fund. We did that. Everyone pitched in and we bought a coffee maker. Then everyone pays $5 a month and we have coffee. I know the feeling. Coffee is a must.

  25. OhCaptain Said,

Neither my wife or I drink coffee. People just give us this really weird look when we tell them there won’t be coffee for breakfast. We don’t even own a coffee maker.

Step away from my bottle of Coke Zero. It’s mine. Don’t even think of touching it.

OhCaptain’s last blog post..Much more later. Let’s play HOCKEY!

  26. Clayton Said,

Great discussion. And I Actually like that you practice what you preach. That’s when you can tell a post has come unitedly.
