This Doesn’t Suck…
Posted under How I See It by MikeI’ve mentioned in a previous post that I’d love to link to if I hadn’t blown up my blog a few months ago. I’ve regarded myself as the “Domestic God” and with good reason. I have the need for clean. Not sparkling, but clean and tidy. A clean house makes me very happy.
So imagine my dismay when our vacuum started to spit out more dirt than it was sucking up. I can’t blame the “old girl”, we’ve had our cheap, inexpensive Eureka since before the last ice age. She’s been a good workhorse but I think time and the addition of teenagers, a dog and two cats was just too much for it.
Here’s the dilemma, I have spent forever researching vacuums. Between Consumer Reports, Amazon reviews, “Big Box Store” reviews and internet searches. My eyes have grown weary and very tired, and to top it off, I still have no clear idea what to buy.
I have a Roomba and I love it. I’m awaiting replacement batteries for it and when they come it will be back in rotation. It’s a great general vacuum, but it’s not going to handle the heavy stuff and it won’t work on the stairs.
So what sucks best for you?
What are you using for your dirt, dog and cat hair and toddler’s Cheerios?
Do you have carpeting and/or hardwood floors?
Help, I’m begging you…

Um….mine is older than dirt too….I’m just glad it still sucks….Oh…that sounded baaaaaddd!!!

We got a Eureka as a wedding present. It sucks, but not in the way you want a vacuum to suck. More to the point, it blows. (It’s Megamaid Sir, she’s gone from “suck” to “blow”!)
It’s worse on hardwood than on carpet (Berber), but doesn’t pick a damn thing up from the throw rug. Yep, I love my vacuum.
Hubs got me a darlin’ little Simplicity canister vacuum and I love it. Versatile, maneuverable and very slick, and it totally sucks.

I just had to buy a bew vacuum claener. On a whim, and trying to avoid brands I haven’t been happy with in the past I bought a bizarre looking Bissel V. It’s lightweight, but a little weirdly erratic when you are vacuuming. But it wouldn’t work on carpets – I have all hardwood, cork and tile.

My Kirby was the best money I ever spent. Very worth it!

We have tile, hardwood and carpet in this house. We use several different things. I hate most of them. I have a really sweet shop vac in the garage. It’s not allowed into the house without a disaster.

I use a Swiffer for the hardwood floors.
I’ve been through way too many vacuums……currently using the Eureka Boss and I’d rate it as ok. Dirt Devil was the worst. My Hoover from the ’80′s lasted the longest, but then again, it wasn’t made of all plastic parts like they are now.

I love my Kirby, but it only ranks 3rd in value at consumer reports. Dyson get a 2 thumbs down. The best is a much less expensive model (but I forget which one). Oreck may have been #2.

Tell you what, for a techie, I don’t have crap. An old stand up waste of time vacuum cleaner. So what sucks? I guess, me!

My old house (new to me) has central vacuum that I love. I do have an old Hoover that I also use upon occassion – it was purchased in 92 I believe and is still going. I’ve replaced the belt a time or two – but no complaints here. Of course I’ve now jinxed the old girl and she won’t work next time I pull her out.

For hardwood floors I use slipper socks and a wide sweeping leg motion.

I have all hardwoods, so my grandmother’s 60 year old canister vac. I think it’s a Eureka. It’s stainless steel and heavy as hell, but it works when I need it. Usually, I use a dust mop and a broom and a dustpan and brush.
I don’t know why CR gives the Dyson such a bad rating – everyone I know who has one loves it.

I have had my vacuum so long, I have forgotten it’s name. It’s blue and it’s cord is chewed up because I vacuumed over it the first week I bought it, and I still continue to vacuum over it. It’s about a million feet long. LOL!
Kirbys are loud. The ones I’ve heard, anyway. We have a Miele canister and it works great; lots of suction, easy to change the bags, etc.
If it was just me, I’d probably buy a Dyson because of the cyclonic, no-bag action. But because reports (including comment above) indicate that it’s not so great, maybe you should steer clear of it.

You can’t go wrong with a Hoover. We have the Supreme Wind Tunnel. Love it! Word of caution, if you tilt it back too far, it has been know to chew up patches of rugs & flooring.
We also have TWO Shop Vacs. One for inside & one for outdoors. My husband is a freak about keeping leaves and debris off the patio. Instead of using a broom he will bring out the Shop-Vac to clean up before a BBQ!

I heart my dyson and watching the dirt fill up in it is as satisfying as vacuuming can get. I challenged my friend’s hoover and picked up over a cup of dirt and hair after he vacuumed with his hoover on a 9 x 12 rug. Very impressive. It sucks like a …………. (can’t say it, too truck driverish, but it’s a vacuum compliment)

We have hardwood floors. And here’s my dirty little secret…we have a house keeper too. Army gives me 6 months with a housekeeper each time we have a baby. Lolly turned 6 months today. I’m scared.
We do have an oooolllllddddd Hoover. It’s ok. Nothing amazing though.
