Random Thoughts…
Posted under Daughters, Family, How I See It, Work by Mike
Just put my daughter and her boyfriend on a plane for Las Vegas yesterday. It was my birthday gift to her. Not sure how I feel about it. She’s of legal age (damn, I feel old) and she is a responsible kid (adult?). Our children grow up too fast. I know I’ve been told this by others in the past, but it doesn’t hit home till it’s yours. You just have to learn eventually to let go.

I am spending way too much time on on-line cigar articles. Just ask my wife. Recently finished reading about the pairing of cigars with drinks. Here are a few: White wine (Pinot Grigio), red wine (Pinot Noir and Zinfandels), Sherry, Brandy, Whiskey (need a strong cigar), Beer (Ales and Lagers), Tequila and Rum. I’ve not tried it yet, but I’m told coffee enhances a good cigar as well.

I’ve been spending some time keeping up with KT at When Did I Become a Grownup? Her recent experience with her soon to be ex husband (STBX) is a situation that bears watching. Any of us who have gone through the pain of separation and ultimately divorce should check in on her blog. If you happen to have some solid advice to give, I’m sure she would appreciate it.

Weird and disgusting smell had been coming from one of my bedroom closets. Further investigation proved that a couple of rats had made a home in our attic above the closet. Unfortunately (or not!) they died up there as well. So armed in long sleeved shirt, surgical mask, rubber gloves (lots of fiberglass up there) and the determination to rid ourselves of the smell, I climbed up there and retrieved the corpses. One word, yuck!

I am loving this weather lately. Locally it has been in the 70’s pretty consistently and it makes it hard to be in the office. Since my services will no longer be needed at work in a couple of months, I’ve found the sunshine as a distraction. Much like when as kids we anticipated the summer break and therefore studying was a bit more difficult.

My youngest has her braces coming off soon. After a couple of years in these mechanisms of torture for your teeth, she is ecstatic. Chewy candy and popcorn will be on the top of her list now.

Speaking of my youngest, if you ever want a thrill ride and can’t afford Disneyland, drop by my house. Nothing will thrill you like sitting in the passenger seat while she is learning to drive. In Southern California no less. No wonder I’m losing my hair.

My middle child is a cast member of the high school version of “Rent.” Yes, that “Rent.” The producers of the original play have written a “cleaned up” version for high school productions. If you haven’t read there has been a huge uproar here about it. The principal and the drama instructor have been locking horns over the play. Claims of discrimination, “homophobia” and insubordination have been reported. The ACLU has gotten involved, which can’t be good. I’ve even heard that CBS news and some of the local papers will be there for opening night. It’s too bad that a bunch of adults have taken over a high school production. The losers in this battle will be the kids. High school drama is where they’re supposed to learn about scripting, blocking, lighting, sound and other things associated with stage productions.

Did you know that the state of California will pay up to $6,500 dollars to retrain you? I’ve started to contemplate how I can use this to retrain myself under the Obama administration. I could be a tax advisor. His appointees seem like they could use the help. Or maybe a civil engineer. All those highway projects he’s proposing are going to need people.
Or better yet, how about bartending school? The way the economy is tanking there is going to be a lot of people out there looking to drown their sorrows…

I rediscovered cigars a year or so ago. The habit had become a little too expensive so I took a break but now I’m into them again.
I like to try new kinds but I never thought of pairing my drink and smoke.
however, a good maduro with a cup of espresso is killer.
My son just got his braces off..he is a happy camper but the invisalign retainers go on every night for 3 years.

Glad to hear from a fellow cigar aficionado. I’ll have to try the espresso. Got lots of maduro in my hummi.
Yep, we still have the retainers coming. A lot of work for perfect teeth…
I’d go to bartending school if I were you. people may not be doing much banking but they will always be drinking

Dead rats in the attic? Yikes! You’re a brave soul for going in after them.
And what is it about the youngest child learning to drive? My first two were pretty easy and natural. My daughter is afraid of driving and therefore, not really very good at it at all!

I remember a similar problem with my brotehr’s closet, and on investigating I found where his gerbils had disappeared to.
And my older son just got his braces off – yay!
citizen of the world’s last blog post..How I spent my convalescence.
movin - I’m seriously contemplating it. Work nights and have my days to me, could be a good thing…
teri - Teaching them (all three of them) has been an adventure. The last one just seems to be a little more tentative then the other two…
citizen – Gerbils as pets? That just seems wrong…
How about finding a cigar magazine and writing articles for them? It’s not like you don’t know much about em eh?

We had the dead mouse thing happen her a couple of years ago, only it was INSIDE the wall behind the bathroom vanity and I couldn’t get to it. Went out and bought a charcoal air filter and it helped immensely. I like your thoughts on the re-training; isn’t the ice a bartender uses “Shovel Ready”?

Enjoyed this recap, Mike. The drama on the drama is intriguing. Happy for the end of the braces. The rats-YUCK! Off to check out that blog…

Ahhh hells bells….I thought by the time I got to my third…well, I guess I thought they would be sooo awesome at driving I wouldn’t have to do much….bummer. Hell, this first one is killing me!!! I think I’ll let him keep him permit until he’s 25!!!

My youngest is getting his braces off next month… woohooo! He also has his driver’s permit, so I can empathize with the motoring drama.

I should have another whiskey review coming up after Friday…I don’t smoke but don’t mind an oak cask that’s been torched and then filled with a distillate and aged for 30 years…
As for the weather…you suck
OhCaptain’s last blog post..I know – this is only the beginning
Sympathies on the driver’s ed. We are still one down, two to go on that front.
A rat? Really? California is not so alluring now!
The only downside to the braces coming off – now is the ortho demanding that she get her wisdom teeth pulled? UGH!

Sounds like your head is a pretty crowded place to be right now. Here’s some comic relief for ya, What’s the difference between Jesus and Obama?
Jesus knew how to build a cabinet.

Your head can be a scary place Mike!
Sending you child to Vegas with her boyfriend, I wouldn’t have the gumption to do that, not on my dime anyway, without me there to chaperon.
Weaselmomma, that was funny!
BTW, isn’t Cali bankrupt? How can they afford to retrain you?

The trick is to just get into the administration. The government is the only job not laying off. And the pension, don’t forget the pension.

Oh, I feel your pain. My daughter Marissa is 23 and Kyle is 15. Kyle will be driving legally soon — sigh……
M@ – I like your idea. Of course what I don’t know about cigars could fill a magazine…
NukeDad - See, that’s why I need to go to school and learn these things. Like how many nuts to put out or how big a head on a pint of beer. You know important things…
Half Past Kissin Time - The drama seems to never end around here. Even in the drama classes. Stay tuned…
Heather - By the age of 18 their out of the house. Off to school with them. Change the locks and redo their rooms into my den/guitar/music room….
Tart R. - Seems like the youngest can be the most challenging…
OhCaptain - Looking forward to the review on the 30 year old. Just old enough to know what their doing and young enough to be naughty…
Cocotte – Yeah, we’ve got the wisdom teeth coming out soon as well…
WeaselMomma – If you think it’s crowded out there you should see it from my point of view…Funny joke.
Russ – If I was a sane person I wouldn’t have been a Dad. Do you think sanity has anything to do with raising a child? No way. Califormia will just print money like the Feds do…
Above average Joe - Pensions are important, especially for someone as close to retirement as I am. Thanks for the heads up…
Debbie - I wish all the luck in the world as well…
Vegas? I wish you were my dad. I don’t think my dad would actually “let” me go to Vegas now….as a married adult.
Thanks for the recap! Sounds like busy times in your household. I had no idea about California and retraining.
Maybe you could be retrained as an AIG executive.
