Unemployed?

Posted under How I See It, Work by Mike

flatline

It hit me today.

In little more than a month I’ll be out of a job.  The last seven years of showing up at the same place everyday and seeing the same people for eight hours a day, will no longer exist.

I’ve known this time would eventually come to pass.  For the past year while this bank was in trouble, rumors flew.  There was talk about being taken over by another bank or the FDIC.  Last November both happened.  FDIC came in and shut us down and then another bank, a huge bank bought us up.  They kept the branches, but those of us in the corporate office are redundant.

So most of us were issued our walking papers.  Mine will be in about five weeks.

But it really didn’t hit me until today as I watched a group of contractors with the FDIC going around the office inventorying all the furniture, computers and basically everything not bolted down.  Equipment, and parts I’ve been using for the past few years are now the property of someone else.  Tagged, bar coded and a photo taken of them as they move around our office.

Then as a cherry to top all of this, we get an email notice from Human Resources to come by and pick up our unemployment forms to fill out ahead of time.

I’m not worried.  I have always been fortunate in finding work.  I was looking for a job when I got this one.  It just seems very weird to watch this one slowly die.  Like being on life support and waiting for someone to pull the plug.

I guess in five weeks my job goes flatline….

  1. Hammer Said,

Sorry to hear this. I have a couple of family members that just lost their banking jobs as well.

I’m glad that you are looking ahead to the next opprotunity.

  2. M@ Said,

that must be pretty trippy indeed. You’ll find something tho. Everything happens for a reason, even crappy stuff like this. At least you got to hold onto your job longer than most.

Glad to see you have a positive attitude. I have a hard time filling out 2 weeks after giving notice. It must be vary strange to go on working as your job dies.

  4. Cocotte Said,

You seem remarkably calm about this. I think my husband would have had a heart attack by now – he’s kind of high strung about money. Then again, I don’t work, so our income would be $0

I’m expecting a very clean house, and dinner on the table every evening for the time being…

  6. Tara R. Said,

I may be standing in the bread line with ya. I’ll know in a week or two. Good luck with your job search.

  7. terri Said,

I know we all worry about a job loss these days, but it hits harder than we’d ever imagine when the possibility becomes reality. I think I’d freak out, not because I think I couldn’t find another job, but because I’d never find one like the one I have.

I hope you do find something else quickly.

    Hey guess what???
Today I finally did our taxes and you know what I found out?
That my husband’s unemployment doesn’t count towards income for CA State taxes…
    Sweet!

Just sell your body under the table and you will make just as much $$ as you did working in a cubbie

Must be weird to have to know ahead of time. When I was laid off in 2001, I only got 1-2 days notice.
