A Public Service…
Posted under How I See It by MikeI know first hand like many of you, that the trials and tribulations of raising our rug rats to adulthood is at the very least an adventure. If I had a nickel for every time my kids have banged up or bruised themselves, I’d be a rich man.
However like many of you out there, the rising costs of health care and insurance are a major concern. We cringe every time we hear our kids complain about a “boo-boo” or yell “ouch” as they come running into the house. Doctors don’t come cheap.
So as a concerned parent and all around cheap bastard, I’d like to present the following home remedies for your consideration. As a note, I can not personally verify all of these remedies or take credit for them.
But some of them are pretty cool…
· Drinking two glasses of GATORADE can relieve headaches almost immediately.
· COLGATE toothpaste is an excellent salve for burns.
· Try chewing a couple of ALTOIDS for your stuffy nose instead of an expensive inhaler.
· Mix 1 tablespoon of horseradish in 1 cup of olive oil and let sit for 30 minutes, then massage it in for instant relief of aching muscles.
· Mix ¼ cup of vinegar with ¼ cup of honey and take 1 tablespoon six times a day for a sore throat. The vinegar kills the bacteria.
· Use honey for skin blemishes. Cover the blemish with honey and place a band-aid over it. The honey kills the bacteria, keeps the skin sterile and speeds healing.
· For toenail fungus, soak your feet in LISTERINE mouthwash. The antiseptic cleans the fungus right up.
· Using FORMULA 409 will work as a bug killer as well. Spraying them directly will rid you of menacing bees, wasps, hornets or yellow jackets.
· Pour a drop of ELMER’S glue over a splinter and then let dry. Peel the dried glue off the skin and the splinter will stick to the glue.
· Applying DAWN dishwashing liquid to your pet’s bath and rinsing thoroughly will rid your pet of any fleas.

Cool tips. I’m onna try some of them.

Really? Dawn getting rid of fleas? My curiously is piqued. (But is my spelling of piqued correct?)
I prefer a shot of whiskey for a sore throat. At least that’s what I did in college when I didn’t have health insurance!
it’s amazing how much you don’t need to go out and get, that you can fix with stuff you already have.
Where did you get this list?
Excellent advice! I’m bookmarking this.

Too bad after you bathe the pet they are left with “dishpan paws”.

Presumably part of the splinter has to be protruding from the skin for the glue trick to work? In which case, tweezers will do as well.
Altoids I’d use except they have gelatin in them and so are on my verboten list. But I like the 409 trick.

Not medical, but Colgate will also remove a water ring left on real wood by a drinking glass.
In a pinch (though jewelers would tell you this is horrible for your stones), Sun Light dish detergent will make your diamond ring sparkle.
I might have to try that splinter remedy on Linus next time she has one. You’d think somebody was performing major surgery with the performance she puts on when she has a splinter (or splither as she says).

Thrifty! Nifty!
These are GREAT tips. I could’ve used that Elmer’s Glue tip a couple weeks ago. I’m going to remember that one.

Wow Mike,
I do believe you’ve turned into Martha (Stewart).
My Dad always told me to learn something new everyday. Now, I’m set for about 6 days so I can stop trying so hard.
FYI – I’ve done the dawn/flea thing… It actually worked on a kitten a co-worker had and I felt compelled to clean the kitty up.
I’ve also used “superglue” on my hangnails, that works too!
