A Strange New World…

Posted under How I See It by Mike

What is this strange and new world?  A place where things are not as I’ve known them to be before.  My world has been replaced by this “alternate” reality.

Since being “reclassified” as a stay at home husband / dad / slave / handyman extraordinaire / master pet groomer and domestic god by my recent lack of having a place to go to from eight to five every weekday, I’ve seen my neighborhood differently.

When I was employed, I only saw my neighbors in the evenings during the week and on the weekends.  The times when people seemed to be doing normal things.  Cleaning their garages, taking their kids to soccer practice, running errands and lying about golf scores.

However, in the light of day during the work week when most people are off to their 9 to 5 cubicle enslavement, the neighborhood takes on a different look.

It’s quieter during the day.  The kids are gone to school and most husbands and wives have started their daily work commutes.  They only people around are the moms with little ones jogging around the neighborhood and the gardeners who are cranking up their blowers and weed whackers.  Repair trucks showing up to fix plumbing or electrical.  Dog groomer’s trucks making house calls.  Real estate agents (is there really any business?) running around posting “Open House” signs.

I walk with the dog, and we explore parts of the neighborhood that we’ve not had the time or inclination to do before.  I stroll and think this is what they mean by “stop and smell the roses” while the dog chases the local “bunnies.”  I head over the local caffeine jolt shop were they have my large cup ready for me when I walk in the door.  I’ve become a regular, along with many of my neighbors.

I’ve come to realize that I’ve needed this time to appreciate where we live.  To venturing out and seeing what our neighborhood is all about.  To get out with the dog, cat, wife, kids, friends or neighbors so that we can all take the time and stop and smell the roses…

Being a work at home dad, I’ve met more moms than dads. I think I’m part of the mom club or something.

I did the same thing as a SAHD. It is nice, but then I’ve always been a “stop and smell the roses” kind of guy.

You have a good attitude about things. Have fun.

When I walk the dog I have plenty of time to stop and smell the roses while he pees on every mail box in the neighborhood.

It’s good to know you’re enjoying the time off and not obsessing about where the next paycheck comes from. If and when it’s my turn, I can only hope to be as positive as you seem to be.
