BlogHer…???
Posted under How I See It by MikeAs I mentioned in my last post, I found it intriguing that many of our “fellow” bloggers have made the pilgrimage to the windy city of Chicago to meet this weekend.
From what I can extract from the conference website BlogHer seems to be an excuse to meet, greet and drink copious amounts of alcoholic libations.
I’m all for a party. Hell, I’ve instigated my fair share of them myself. But what I’m having a hard time understanding is why this is a gender based get together. I’ve looked over the website and have found almost 99% of the participants are female, hence the title of the conference. I was a bit surprised that I found a few men who were participating.
By the way dudes, really, a woman’s conference? Were you required to check your “cojones” at the door before they’d let you in?
When I started, I had the intention of writing a blog from the view of a dad, a husband, an ex husband, and generally the mind of a “middle aged” crazy man. I think got that last part right.
I had sought, in the beginning, advice from various other “male” bloggers. Many said that my primary audience would be women, and that I should take that into account when writing.
I didn’t….
But women have been reading, just as I have been reading their blogs. I have found that we are all a community of parents, soon to be parents, or frustrated and wanting to move away from our kids parents. That we all have our ups and downs with kids, spouses, in-laws, neighbors, schools, work and well, just life in general.
If a convention is in order, maybe we should consider one for all genders. No matter if you’re male, female, married, single, straight, gay, sane or insane, though the latter is usually a prerequisite to writing a blog.
A kind of, and I’m giving credit to SwirlGirl for this, a BlogUs convention.
So Chicago has been done, where do you think we should hold ours….Fresno?

I think the reason for the BlogHER convention was for the women to be in each others company sans men. You guys do change things in a social setting. Perhaps these women felt safer meeting a group of women (who they really don’t know) rather than men. Unless it was a lesbian get together ( I would be so down for that, I love lesbians) most women wouldn’t have to worry about any sexual tension or their male partners being concerned about them meeting up with men (yes it would be in a group setting) from the internet.
Besides we can’t very well do the secret oath and handshake if you guys are around.
I’m actually uncomfortable around large groups of women. I’d rather be hanging with the dudes………that said, I’d probably never go to a blogger convention. I prefer to remain mysterious and anonymous.

You have some very valid points. Having just returned from BlogHer, I can say that 90+ % of us were there to meet people face to face that we have been reading for a long time. The guys who were there were definitely in that 90+%. There was a minority segment of attendees that would be classified as the ‘man hating, vagina power segment’. However, they were a small enough % that they did not intrude in the rest of us having good time. The other give or take 7% were there in self promotion of a company or a product. They gave out tons of swag. Dad-Blogs 2010 will have a much different and family feel to it. I love the idea of BlogUs, but I must say that I had a kick ass time at BlogHer thanks to the bloggers.

Why shouldn’t women have the right to get together without men? It’s not about excluding men from the blogworld, it’s about female bonding. Men are free to do the same if they like – start up a BlogHim if you want. I have plenty of male friends. who I lve dearly, but there are times when I want to be in the company of only other women.

Yeah, I’ve wondered why they named it BlogHer, given that men are welcome (see the info on BlogHer ’10). Honestly, I loved that there were almost no men there. It completely removes a certain dynamic, and I liked that. Compare it to women being invited up to “the huntin’ camp.” Just not the same, I’m guessing. That said, I would love to meet you, Mike, so BlogUs sounds great
Just so you know, the link under My Blogs in your profile does not lead to this one.

And we should have all the advertisers and sponsors foot the bill for the BlogHim. Kind of like a Title 9 in reverse.
