I Got Hijacked…

Posted under How I See It by Mike

 hacked

Wednesday morning I woke up and went through my normal routine.  Grabbed my running clothes, kissed my wife as she got ready for work and I was out the door for my morning ritual of abusing my body for three miles.  I came home, showered, grabbed the dog leash and Casey and I headed for coffee.  Usually on this walk in the morning my inspiration to write comes to me.  I had this post all ready to punch out about how the kids are now back in school and my wife is back at work and how it really does now feel like I’m a househusband.  More on this later.

So when Casey (the dog) and I got back I ran upstairs to start writing.  Booted the computer up, grabbed cereal and sat down to start my creative process (don’t laugh).  I go to log into my website and all I find is a blank grey screen with a “r00t-x uid=0(root) r00tx@hotmail.com ~” written at the bottom.

My host confirmed that I was hacked and somehow they got to me through my local machine, hacked my password to my ftp site and screwed with my index.php file.  Well, that just made my morning, the assholes…

So I spent the better part of the day running antivirus software on all my machines (found a couple of trojons) getting passwords changed and asking  my host to reload from the last backup.  Are we having fun yet?

Am I bitter?  Yeah a little, but it also reminded me that I need to be protective of my stuff.  Getting lazy will one day catch up with you.  I think I should have hired Matt over at Mattdaddy to help me secure this site down.  He’s supposed to be a genius when it comes to this stuff.

I’ll even forgive him for being a Red Sox fan…

  1. Debbie Davis Said,

Oh, bummer! My hard drive crashed a couple of weeks ago! I learned the hard way, too. I need to back up my files on a regular basis!

  2. M@ Said,

Oh man, isn’t this the second time you got screwed?

I dunno about Genius, but I have several things you can probably change to make things more secure. :)

  3. Cocotte Said,

I saw the grey screen yesterday or the day before when I stopped by. Then my windows shut down. Kind of freaked me out. Glad you are up and running again.

I always thought Trojans were there to protect us from…not to spread virus. I had one too – it cost me $300 in Geek Squadding to get rid of it.

That happened to my blog several years back. In my case, I didn’t set the permissions correctly and someone was able to change my index file. Pain in the butt to figure out what was going on.

Note to self: backup my files!

Sorry that you got hacked! I never understood why people do that.

  10. Bad Momma Said,

That sucks! Took my husband a week to fix his computer when it was a victim of a “drive-by” infection. Our new anti-virus really slows things down a bit when booting up. But better safe than sorry!

  11. Oscar Said,

That has to suck. I have been pretty lucky so far (knock on wood)

I am fortunate to work with IT geeks.

    Glad you recovered!

  12. OhCaptain Said,

Bummer. Hackers suck. H1N1 doesn’t scare me nearly as much as IT security. Good thing I work in IT…but then again, that probably makes more paranoid then most people. Updating virus patterns is a way of life.

Very glad to see you are practicing good backup practices.
