Match.com or Eharmony

Posted under Wife, Women

For those who might not know the intricate details of internet dating let me expand your horizons.  Match.com is a site where you input your profile and basically put yourself out there for the world to see.  The good, bad and the socially inept are all gathered to be picked at and prodded.  If someone sees what they remotely like in your profile, you start communicating.

Eharmony is a more passive dating site.  You take a personality test (long!) and create a profile for yourself.   You then (shudder!) let Eharmony pick a few people who they think you’ll match up with.  These specimens (I mean people) sent to you are those who they think your compatible with.

Many people know how my wife and I met.  We both were internet dating and found each other.  She and I happened to have profiles on Match.com at the same time.  She was one of a couple of women I had started a correspondence with and we just seemed to click.  After the first date (3 hours at a wine bar can make me look good!!!) I knew that this was the most interesting woman I had met in a long time.

I’m a firm believer in opposites that attract.  My wife and I have similar attitudes in raising kids and general home life, not unlike many couples.  However, she is an 80’s music nut.  I’m retro 70’s.  She likes opera, I like jazz.  She doesn’t mind the house in disarray, I am constantly picking up after everyone.

But I love that she knows when it’s time for just us and makes sure to schedule that time around the kids.  I know that when she’s got that look in her eyes its time for me to vacate with the kids and give her down time.

The essence of this story is that if we had both been on Eharmony at the same time we would have never met.  Are personalities are diverse enough that there is no way in hell Eharmony would have placed us together.

Coupling

Posted under My Observations, Women

Recently on my birthday my wife gave me the complete four seasons of “Coupling”.  For those not in the know, this was a very funny BBC show first shown in the US on late night PBS channels.  At least that’s how I came to stumble on a few years ago.  The premise is not far from NBC’s “Friends” concept except much more bawdy in its humor.  There were three men and three women interacting with each other, giving us their viewpoints of both sexes.  This is not your typical family show and there was a reason it was shown late night.  The writing was very well done and the creator of the series was quoted that he wrote it with “Seinfeld” in mind.

Below, you’ll find some quotes from the show.  Enjoy:

“It’s not genetically possible for men to have opinions about fabric.”

“We are men. We are different. We have only one word for soap. We do not own candles. We have never seen anything of any value in a craft shop. We do not own magazines full of photographs of celebrities with their clothes on.”

The Four Pillars of the Male Heterosexual Psyche:

“We like naked women, stockings, lesbians, and Sean Connery best as James Bond.

A girlfriend’s three-stage strategy for having a threesome:

“Darling, I’d love to try a threesome.”
“Darling, one day I’d consider a threesome.”
“Darling, I’m pregnant, there’s your threesome!”

Three Things All Men Should Know

“You’re never going be famous.”
“You’re fatter than you think.”
“And most important than all, they don’t keep wearing stockings.”

Left Holding the Purse

Posted under Family, My Observations, Women

There’s something to be said in being the one who holds the purse or in my case purses.  When shopping with my wife and daughters I inevitably become the one holding the purses while they try on clothing.  If you’ve ever spent anytime outside of a women’s dressing room, you’ll find many a man doing his time holding the purse.  Be it the husband or boyfriend, we all congregate at the openings of these sanctuaries, away from the acres of clothing.  We hope desperately that an open chair or couch is provided as we wait for our wives or girlfriends to emerge from the depths of the dressing rooms.  We meet as a group, camaraderie in our common cause.  Brownie Points.  These are commonly known also as get out of jail cards.  Whenever said wife or girlfriend is angered by oh, say neglecting to pick up our old underwear from the floor, we hope that they remembered our time in helping them pick out that cute red dress.

Now when the wife or girlfriend emerges from the dressing room they will ask us for our opinion.  It really isn’t a serious inquiry.  I mean, a real man no matter how aware they think they are in fashion really knows very little.  A well dressed man will always have a woman who’s made sure that the shirt coordinates with the pants.  In my case, I have four fashion consultants who have no problem telling me that the purple shirt I’ve picked is actually brown.  And it does nothing for the pants I’ve selected to go with them.

Wine, Women and … Cigars?

Posted under Cigars, My Observations, Women

I arrived back yesterday to the land of offices and cubicles after taking a short vacation last week.  It was difficult to put on long pants and a dress shirt after spending last week in shorts, tee shirts and flip flops.  With a week off, my wife and I decided to stay home instead of traveling.  Sometimes having the hustle of getting somewhere can make a vacation a chore.  I mean, I live a mile from a Southern California beach.  People come from all over the country to vacation where I live.

My days were spent with the family, the gym (still trying to stave off middle age) and playing around with setting up this blog (still a work in progress).  Afternoons were spent barbequing a steak or other meat, sipping a glass of my favorite California wine (yum!) and enjoying my latest passion, cigars.  I’ve enjoyed cigars in the past but only on rare occasions.  A friend started my current obsession with them this past year.  I’m a member of so many cigar websites that my email inbox gets flooded daily on new deals.  Enjoying a cigar in the late afternoon especially this time of year in Southern California is special.  The days are longer and weather is warm.  A good cigar and a glass of wine in my humble opinion can make the end of the day exceptional.
